Rationale

An operating system (OS) is a software system that acts as an interface between the users and the computer hardware. Although the OS allows the users to communicate with the hardware at a higher level, its functionalities should be learned in order to maximize the use of the computing resources. In this course, the different methods of managing a specific resource will be surveyed in order to enable the students to select the right OS for their specific hardware and computing requirements.

Objectives

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

  • describe the functions of OS;
  • design and implement programs to perform simple OS tasks; and
  • evaluate the performance of different OS algorithms.
