Introduction

The Institute of Computer Science started offering its BS Computer Science (BSCS) degree program in 1983, believed to bethe first such program in the country. To date, the Institute is taking in 200 new freshmen and producing 100-120 BSCS graduates every year.

The Institute's BSCS program emphasizes strength of technical preparation and produces graduates highly capable of working in the computer industry and pursuing graduate studies in Computer Science. A solid technical background complemented by experience on real systems provide the students tools to handle the most demanding aspects of systems development, data management and scientific computing.

The Program is based on the ACM Curriculum Recommendations. It gives students a broad knowledge of Computer Science. Basically, the program requires students to take courses in programming, discrete structures, data structures, algorithms, numerical computation, databases, computer architecture, operating systems, programming languages, and automata theory. Students are given the option to take specialized courses such as computer graphics, multimedia programming, parallel computation, artificial intelligence, neural networks and robotics. The curriculum also allows students to take a number of elective courses.

The Institute revises the curriculum every four years to be at pace with emerging and rapidly changing technologies in computing, information, and communication. The 2002 BSCS Curriculum incorporates the UP System's Revitalized General Education Program (RGEP).
