Master of Science in Computer Science
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants who have received the Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from UP with a weighted average of 2.5 or better, or Diploma in Computer Science from UP with a weighted average grade of 2.0 or better are automatically qualified for admission.
All other applicants must satisfy the following qualifications:
- holders of Bachelor's degree in any field from any recognized institution with an average of 2.0 or better;
- proficient in at least one programming language; and,
- with at least two years of IT-related work experience (waived if the applicant is a BS in Computer Science, BS in IT or BS in Information Management graduate of a reputable school).
Acceptability of an applicant will be determined on the following basis:
- A fully accomplished application form
- An official transcript of records and other certificates of training
- Work description and other documentation of IT-related projects
- Two letters of recommendation from former professors and/or employers
Applicants who will not satisfy the admission requirements will be advised to apply for the Diploma in Computer Science program.
M.S. COMPUTER SCIENCE CURRICULUM
The Master of Science in Computer Science curriculum is composed of the following:
- 12 units of core courses
- 6 units of major courses
- 9 units of minor courses
- 1 unit of seminar
- 6 units of MS Thesis
- Total 34 units
The core courses are required of all MSCS students and are composed of the following courses:
- CMSC 214 - Principles of Programming Languages
- CMSC 215 - Advanced Computer Systems
- CMSC 244 - Algorithms and Advanced Data Structures I
- CMSC 245 - Algorithms and Advanced Data Structures II
The major courses are 200-level computer science courses which can be selected from the List of Graduate Courses offered by the Institute.
The minor courses may be taken from another field, like Information Technology, Mathematics, Statistics, Management, Economics, Agriculture, Forestry, and other departments in UPLB with an MS program.
