Seminar Abstract:

The traveling salesman problem (TSP), job-shop scheduling, vehicle routing, scheduling of aircraft landing, gene sequencing, and many others are combinatorial optimization problems whose solutions are of real-world importance. However, combinatorial optimization problems are NP-hard because even though exact algorithms exist to solve these problems, they are inefficient for large instances of the problem. To solve these problems at larger instances, two general heuristics are used: graph-based and distributed multi-agent-based. These heuristics were developed to find near-optimal (and sometimes, optimal) solutions within a given time. An example of graph-based heuristics is the popular branch and bound. Distributed multi-agent-based methods abound such as genetic algorithms, memetic algorithms, tabu search, simulated annealing, simulated jumping, neural networks, and swarm intelligence.

Algorithmic Perspective in the UPLB Student Registration Process

Seminar Abstract:

During the registration period, students often ask questions on how the schedule of the courses assigned to them, including the sections, were generated. This seminar will present the answer to the above questions by looking at the algorithmic perspective of the registration process. Computational problems associated with the registration process will be defined and proposed solutions will be presented.

Road Map: The UPLB Computerized Registration - Problems, Solutions, Opportunities and Challenges

Seminar Abstract:

Student registration is the single most important process especially in tertiary academic institutions. It is a process that involves course timetabling and enlistment. University course timetabling involves scheduling courses in available rooms and timeslots with considerations to teacher's preferences among other constraints, while enlistment involves enrollment of students to courses subject to the course's capacity and the student's schedule.

For years now, our university has been trying to improve our registration process by utilizing our Information Technology/Computer Science infrastructures and capabilities.
